Co-existence between fisheries and the offshore wind industry in Norway - What can we learn from abroad?

Welcome to webinar on Co-existence between fisheries and the offshore wind industry

This webinar is part of a project, Knowledge acquisition for Coexistence between the fishing - and offshore wind industry, funded by FHF (the Norwegian Seafood Research Fund).

The aim of this project is to give an overview of existing knowledge and knowledge gaps of possible effects and consequences of the offshore windfarms on the Norwegian fishing industry.

In the first section of this webinar, we will present our project findings.

In the second session we will focus on the coexistence between offshore wind industry and fisheries.  Where we will get insight to the prosses behind the resent selection of new areas for offshore wind in Norway, and how fishing – and offshore wind industry collaborate in Norway today.

Further, to learn from countries that have been in this process much longer than us we have invited speakers from Ireland, Scotland and Netherland to talk about how they work on coexistence.

Finally, we will have a discussion / debate: On how we can better the coexistence between the fisheries and offshore wind industries – What can Norway learn from abroad?

Session 1: Knowledge acquisition for co-existence between the offshore wind industry and fisheries

  • What knowledge on environmental effects of floating wind do we have and what is missing? Insight on the consequences of offshore wind to the fishing industry - Anne Christine Utne Palm, Institute of Marine Research
  • Preparing knowledge and experience from the fishing industry for credible and legitimate marine spatial planning - Nils Roar Hareide, Runde Environmental Centre
  • What does the Norwegian Government expect with “co-existence”? Are we prepared? - Dorothy Dankel, SINTEF Ocean, UiB

Session 2. Co-existence between fisheries and the offshore wind industry

How do we work in Norway?

  • Experiences from the collaborative work between the fisheries organizations and Offshore Norway to achieve principles for co-existence – Jan Henrik Sandberg, Norges Fiskarlag (Norwegian Fishermen's Association)
  • Experiences from the working process in selection of new areas for offshore wind in Norway – Ingvild Henriette Kristin Andersson, NVE (Norwegian water and energy resources)

How do fisheries and offshore wind industry work on co-existence abroad?

  • Killebegs Fisheries Organization, Ireland, about their experience with cooperation Hexicon (floating windfarm) – Michael Keatinge, Killybegs Fisherman's Organisation
  • Fishing in Hywind Scotland (floating windfarm) – Monica Fundingsland, Equinor
  • Fisheries in offshore windfarm area – Beatriz Deetman, Marine Research institute Netherlands

Panel discussion: What can Norway learn from abroad?

Panel: Bård Aarbakke from the Directorate of Fisheries; Mia Høgi from the fisheries organisation Pelagisk Forening; Terje Eriksen fisherman; Gunnar Birkeland from Source Galileo; Eviny
